However, <strong>it cannot predict an injury with certainty or automatically determine the perfect running shoe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This distinction is important when using gait analysis responsibly.<\/p>\n<h2>Gait analysis is first and foremost an observation tool<\/h2>\n<p>When observing someone running, we can look at several elements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>foot strike;<\/li>\n<li>the way the foot moves through stance;<\/li>\n<li>certain movements of the foot and ankle;<\/li>\n<li>overall stability;<\/li>\n<li>some asymmetries;<\/li>\n<li>cadence;<\/li>\n<li>differences observed between several pairs of shoes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Video makes it possible to slow the movement down and examine certain details more easily.<\/p>\n<p>But what we see must always be interpreted in context.<\/p>\n<h2>Pronation is normal<\/h2>\n<p>Pronation is often one of the first terms associated with gait analysis.<\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>pronation is not an abnormality<\/strong>. It is a natural movement involved in normal foot function.<\/p>\n<p>The useful question is therefore not simply: \u201cDoes this runner pronate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is more relevant to consider how the runner moves, to what extent, how they feel, whether they feel stable and whether their sensations change between shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Reducing gait analysis to a \u201cpronator \/ neutral \/ supinator\u201d classification is too simplistic.<\/p>\n<h2>Can gait analysis predict an injury?<\/h2>\n<p>This is where scientific evidence calls for considerable caution.<\/p>\n<p>Systematic reviews examining numerous biomechanical variables in runners have found that most individual measurements do not, on their own, predict future running-related injuries sufficiently well.<\/p>\n<p>Certain factors may be associated with particular injuries or populations, but results are often inconsistent.<\/p>\n<p>Gait analysis should therefore never be used to claim:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYou move like this, therefore you are going to get injured.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That conclusion would go beyond what the scientific evidence supports.<\/p>\n<h2>Why are running injuries so difficult to predict?<\/h2>\n<p>Because they are multifactorial.<\/p>\n<p>Risk may be influenced by many factors, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>previous injury history;<\/li>\n<li>changes in training load;<\/li>\n<li>recovery;<\/li>\n<li>sleep;<\/li>\n<li>training frequency and intensity;<\/li>\n<li>running experience;<\/li>\n<li>physical capacity;<\/li>\n<li>terrain;<\/li>\n<li>and, in some cases, biomechanical factors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A few seconds of video cannot therefore summarise an individual runner\u2019s complete injury risk.<\/p>\n<h2>So what is gait analysis useful for in a running store?<\/h2>\n<p>For something much more practical: <strong>observing and comparing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine a runner trying three different shoes.<\/p>\n<p>The first may feel unstable. The second may appear to provide more support but feel too rigid. The third may feel both comfortable and smooth.<\/p>\n<p>Video analysis can then be used as <strong>an additional piece of information<\/strong> alongside the runner\u2019s own sensations.<\/p>\n<p>It should not replace what the runner feels.<\/p>\n<h2>Your sensations matter<\/h2>\n<p>A gait pattern that looks \u201cperfect\u201d on video is of little value if the runner feels uncomfortable in the shoe.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, some visible characteristics may simply be part of that individual runner\u2019s normal movement and may be perfectly compatible with pain-free running.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The goal is not to make every runner move in exactly the same way.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Should you change your running gait?<\/h2>\n<p>Not automatically.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing something on video does not mean it needs to be changed immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Deliberately modifying running technique can alter certain biomechanical variables.
