Hold
While jogging, check heel hold and toe room.

Foam, stack height and support

Firmness describes how readily a sole gives under load. Stack height describes the distance between your foot and the ground. Two shoes of similar height can feel very different. Platform width, heel shape and how the upper holds your foot can all affect the feel of a turn. Even a firm shoe can feel awkward if the heel slips or the forefoot feels squeezed.

Try the same turn in both pairs

Pair A feels soft on the straight, but your foot shifts towards the edge in a turn. Pair B feels firmer and lets you turn more naturally. Repeat the same turn at the same easy pace. If you notice it again, consider how often you turn on your usual route.

Now compare two shoes in the same size. One gives your toes room but slips at the heel; the other holds the heel but squeezes the toes. Try a different shape before going up or down a size. Bring your usual socks and compare both feet.

A fitting that answers your question

Use your current pair as a reference and keep the same socks. Walk, jog at your usual easy pace and, if the space allows, change direction. Note underfoot comfort, heel hold and confidence separately. If you are still torn, think about the surface you run on most often and repeat the comparison under the same conditions.

High, soft and stable are separate questions

Stack height is the thickness underfoot. Drop is the difference between heel and forefoot height. Softness is how the shoe feels when loaded, while the base and the upper can affect how secure you feel. Two shoes with the same stack can feel quite different. You might like a soft shoe on a greenway and feel less confident in it on a cambered corner. Those impressions tell you about those situations. They cannot predict your injury risk.

Same body weight, different routes

Picture two runners who wear the same size and usually go out for forty minutes. One stays on level paths and finds the forefoot harsh on the way home. A smoother ride with comparable heel hold might be worth a try. The other runs across cobbles and sloping junctions and slows to feel steady. Comparing base widths while keeping enough toe room gives that runner a more relevant starting point.

Try both standing, walking and jogging with your usual socks. If the space allows, make an easy turn and return to the first pair. Notice which sensation comes back. If the softer pair wins in a straight line but the other feels easier through corners, choose for the route you actually run.

What to compare

Stack and heel-to-toe drop

Softness and base width

Heel hold and toe room

Shoe foam, stack and drop
Two soles of the same thickness may feel different.

Same thickness, softer foam

Same thickness, firmer foam

Stack is thickness underfoot.
