{"id":9,"date":"2026-08-26T13:44:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T11:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.trippsport.fr\/blog\/what-is-heel-to-toe-drop-running-shoes\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T14:07:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T12:07:37","slug":"what-is-heel-to-toe-drop-running-shoes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trippsport.fr\/blog\/en\/what-is-heel-to-toe-drop-running-shoes\/","title":{"rendered":"What is heel-to-toe drop in running shoes?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Heel-to-toe drop is one of the figures you will find on almost every running-shoe specification sheet: 0 mm, 4 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm\u2026<\/p>\n<p>But this number is often given more importance than it deserves.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to some common beliefs, <strong>there is no universally superior heel-to-toe drop for running<\/strong>, and this measurement alone cannot determine the best shoe for an individual runner.<\/p>\n<h2>What is heel-to-toe drop?<\/h2>\n<p>Heel-to-toe drop is the difference in height between the heel and the forefoot of a shoe.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if a shoe measures 36 mm under the heel and 28 mm under the forefoot, its drop is <strong>8 mm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Drop should not be confused with total stack height. A shoe can have a very thick midsole and a low drop, while another can sit much closer to the ground and still have a higher drop.<\/p>\n<h2>Low, medium or high drop<\/h2>\n<p>There is no universal scientific classification, but these practical ranges can help when comparing shoes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>0 to 4 mm<\/strong>: relatively low drop;<\/li>\n<li><strong>5 to 8 mm<\/strong>: intermediate drop;<\/li>\n<li><strong>9 to 12 mm or more<\/strong>: relatively high drop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These categories are useful for comparison. They do not mean that one category is inherently better than another.<\/p>\n<h2>Does drop change running gait?<\/h2>\n<p>It can influence certain biomechanical variables and how mechanical loads are distributed.<\/p>\n<p>However, the relationship is not as simple as \u201clow drop = forefoot strike\u201d and \u201chigh drop = heel strike\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Foot-strike behaviour also depends on running speed, habits, individual anatomy, fatigue, terrain and the overall geometry of the shoe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drop is therefore only one of several factors that may influence running mechanics.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Does a low drop reduce injury risk?<\/h2>\n<p>Current evidence does not show that low-drop shoes provide universal protection against running injuries.<\/p>\n<p>One randomised controlled trial followed <strong>553 recreational runners for six months<\/strong>. Participants used similar running shoes with heel-to-toe drops of 0, 6 or 10 mm.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, injury risk was not significantly different between the three groups.<\/p>\n<p>This is an important finding: <strong>there is no evidence that one particular drop is best for every runner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Is a low drop more \u201cnatural\u201d?<\/h2>\n<p>The word \u201cnatural\u201d is frequently used in running, but it can be misleading.<\/p>\n<p>The human body has a considerable capacity to adapt, and what a runner tolerates depends partly on what they are accustomed to.<\/p>\n<p>A runner who has spent several years in 10 or 12 mm drop shoes may notice a substantial change when suddenly moving to 0 or 4 mm.<\/p>\n<p>This does not mean that low-drop shoes are bad. It means that <strong>a meaningful change in mechanical loading may require time to adapt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Drop redistributes loads rather than making them disappear<\/h2>\n<p>This is probably the most important concept to understand.<\/p>\n<p>Changing shoe geometry does not eliminate mechanical loads. Instead, it may alter how those loads are distributed across different structures.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the shoe and the individual running pattern, loading may change around the foot, ankle, calf, Achilles tendon or knee.<\/p>\n<p>It is therefore misleading to describe one geometry as inherently \u201cgood\u201d and another as inherently \u201cbad\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>Two 8 mm shoes can be completely different<\/h2>\n<p>Drop should never be considered in isolation.<\/p>\n<p>A running shoe\u2019s behaviour also depends on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>total stack height;<\/li>\n<li>foam density and resilience;<\/li>\n<li>rocker geometry;<\/li>\n<li>stiffness;<\/li>\n<li>platform width;<\/li>\n<li>heel geometry;<\/li>\n<li>forefoot flexibility;<\/li>\n<li>overall stability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Two shoes with exactly the same stated drop can therefore produce very different sensations.<\/p>\n<h2>Should you change your heel-to-toe drop?<\/h2>\n<p>Not necessarily.<\/p>\n<p>If you regularly run in a shoe that works well for you, that experience is valuable information.<\/p>\n<p>You do not need to move to a lower drop simply because it is presented as more modern or more natural.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, runners who are accustomed to low-drop footwear do not need to move away from it if they tolerate it well.<\/p>\n<h2>If I change drop, should I transition gradually?<\/h2>\n<p>When the change is substantial, a progressive transition is reasonable.<\/p>\n<p>Moving suddenly from a geometry you have used for years to a very different shoe may change the demands placed on different tissues.<\/p>\n<p>A gradual introduction gives the body time to adapt, particularly when several characteristics change at once, such as drop, stiffness, stack height, foam or rocker.<\/p>\n<h2>Can I use shoes with different drops?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>A runner can use a comfortable shoe for easy runs, a more dynamic shoe for faster sessions and another model for racing.<\/p>\n<p>They do not necessarily need to have exactly the same heel-to-toe drop. What matters most is that the runner tolerates each shoe appropriately.<\/p>\n<h2>Which drop should you choose?<\/h2>\n<p>There is no magic number.<\/p>\n<p>Consider:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>what you currently run in;<\/li>\n<li>your sensations;<\/li>\n<li>your type of running;<\/li>\n<li>the overall geometry of the shoe;<\/li>\n<li>your running history;<\/li>\n<li>how different shoes feel when you try them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trippsport.fr\/blog\/en\/how-to-choose-running-shoes\/\">How to choose running shoes \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What about gait analysis?<\/h2>\n<p>Dynamic gait analysis can help observe how a runner behaves in different shoes.<\/p>\n<p>It can complement the runner\u2019s own sensations, but it cannot calculate a scientifically proven \u201cideal drop\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trippsport.fr\/blog\/en\/what-is-gait-analysis-used-for\/\">What is gait analysis used for? \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>In summary<\/h2>\n<p>Heel-to-toe drop is simply <strong>the difference in height between the heel and the forefoot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It can influence how a shoe behaves and how loads are distributed, but a low drop does not automatically mean better running mechanics, and a high drop does not automatically make a shoe unsuitable.<\/p>\n<p>No single drop has been shown to reduce injuries for every runner.
